Transylvania County, North Carolina, is located in the western region of the state. As of 2000, the population was 29,334. Its county seat is Brevard. The county was formed in 1861 from parts of Henderson County and Jackson County. Transylvania County is located in the Appalachian Mountain range in Western North Carolina, 30 miles southwest of Asheville, NC and 60 miles north of the Greenville-Spartanburg, SC area. The county is a short drive to I-26 and I-40 intersections near Asheville and a 20 minute drive from the Asheville Regional Airport via a 4 lane highway--NC 280.
In 1861, Representative Joseph P. Jordan, who was born on a farm near Blantyre, proposed a bill to form a new county. He chose the name "Transylvania" from Latin words meaning "over the trees" or "across the woods." He also proposed a name for the county seat; "Brevard" was chosen as a tribute to a notable man, Ephraim Brevard, who was locally esteemed for drafting the Mecklenburg Declaration and was an officer in the Revolutionary Army and a citizen of renown. This bill was passed by both houses on February 15, 1861 and became law.
Over a third of the county is part of Pisgah National Forest (a portion of which is considered a rainforest due to its high annual precipitation levels), Dupont State Forest and Gorges State Park, which is home to the largest Black Bear Sanctuary. There are almost 500 miles of mountain trails in the county for residents and their guests to enjoy.
Transylvania County is known as "The Land of Waterfalls" because of the abundance of falls in the area. There are over 260 natural falls in the county. Most of the falls can be viewed from Highways US 64, US 276 and NC 281. Whitewater Falls is the highest waterfall in the Eastern United States.
