From as early as 1827, the area that came to be known as Glenville, North Carolina, had been a town located in the Hamburg township of Jackson County along the banks of the Tuckasegee River.. Prior to its incorporation as the Town of Glenville in 1891, the community was named Hamburgh - later modified to Hamburg, from which the local township got its name. The Hamburgh post office was established there in 1856. That early settlement was used as a fort to protect settlers and their families in case of attack from the local native Cherokee people.
The Town of Glenville, however, was destroyed in 1941 when Nantahala Power and Light Company - then owned by the ALCOA Company - constructed a dam on the Tuckasegee River to supply electricity to make aluminum for the war effort. While filling the new lake, the town was flooded, submerging all of the schools, homes, businesses, and farmlands up to a depth of 300 feet and forming what came to be known as Lake Glenville. Today, although there is no community apart from the many residential lots that comfortably dot the lakeshore, the area is still called Glenville, with the assigned United States Postal Service ZIP Code of 28736.
Lake Glenville is located eight miles from Cashiers, North Carolina. Since 2002, its official name is "Lake Glenville" as the locals refer to it, although it is still listed on many maps as "Thorpe Reservoir." The charming lake has 26 miles of gracious shoreline and is home to many upscale residents and serves as a second home to many others who travel to this pristine spot every year to enjoy the pleasant climate and superb lifestyle afforded by both the lake and the surrounding scenic beauty, Lake Glenville is the highest lake east of the Mississippi at an elevation of 3,942 feet.
